Heritage Tourism

What is Heritage Tourism?

Heritage Tourism is a specific branch of tourism centering travel to experience the places and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past and present. It includes Historic, Cultural, Natural. and Intangible Resources unique and distinctive to the destination.

Five Principles of Cultural Heritage Tourism

Frances Perkins Center grounds its tourism and interpretation in Hargrove International’s Five Principles of Cultural Heritage Tourism:

    1. Focus on Authenticity and Quality

    2. Preserve and Protect Resources

    3. Make Sites and Programs Come Alive

    4. Find the Fit between the Community and Tourism

    5. Collaborate

Heritage Tourism at the Frances Perkins National Monument

In 2024, Frances Perkins Center commissioned a Heritage Tourism Report with generous support from Maine Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Association. Following the expert recommendations from Hargrove International and the Maine Office of Tourism, FPC continues to invest in Heritage Tourism programs to expand and improve the visitor experience at the Frances Perkins National Monument. We welcome your ongoing support of this work.
