Secretary Perkins and colleagues assembled as FDR signs the Social Security Act
President Franklin Roosevelt signs the Social Sceurity Act at approximately 3:30pm on August 14, 1935. Frances Perkins was the chief proponent and major architect of the Social Security Act, which established not only Social Security itself, but the Unemployment Insurance program as well.
