Not in Edgecomb, but right next door, check out some 20th century American history on Sunday, Sept. 7, by touring the Frances Perkins Homestead on the River Road in Newcastle. As I’m sure everyone knows, Madame Perkins was FDR’s Secretary of Labor, who initiated Social Security and other programs for the protection of older people, as well as opportunities for those out of work due to economic downturns. There are two tours, one starting at 9 a.m. for three hours, which includes a walk to the Damariscotta River; the next, at 1:30 p.m., includes only the house and grounds. Both start from Newcastle, so call 207-563-3374 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information, and to purchase tickets.
